Types Of Strapping Tools
Tensioners are specialized tools used in the packaging and shipping industries. In such settings, items that employ stainless steels straps need to be easily and quickly pulled taut to a specific tension all the time. A tensioner winds the metal band until the specific tightness is achieved. This is important so that the weight and pressure is distributed evenly throughout the network of straps crisscrossing whatever cargo the steel is wrapped around. Any imbalance can lead to a break which can start a chain reaction that will take the whole load bearing system down with it. Such an event can seriously damage and even destroy the valuables being protected.


There are four basic kinds of tools that are currently being used. They differ from each other via the specific mechanical method they use to induce tension on the straps.


Windlass


Windlass tools are able to induce the highest amount of tension on steel straps. Because of this they are only used for the most robust and heavy-duty steel bands. Thinner or narrower straps would snap under the strain a windlass crank is capable of producing. Bundling heavy items like lumber or large machinery are the usual purpose this device is used for.


Push-type


A push-type stainless steel strapping tool is especially effective when used on objects with an odd or unusual shape. A big disadvantage of push tensioners is that they have a slightly more complicated and time-consuming method of operation than the other types. The metal strap has to be wound first into a giant slip knot and then threaded though the mouth of the device. It is also only compatible with a specific kind of seal.


Rack-and-Pinion


Rack-and-Pinion style devices were designed for overly large and irregular loads. It uses a serrated grip to pull the stainless steel straps tight. It can be used both with dry and lubricated metal.


Feedwheel


Feedwheel tensioners are the cheapest stainless steel strapping tool. Its fast, convenient and the easiest to use. Its one disadvantage is that it always leaves a little slack once the device is disengaged from the strap itself. This can become a problem when dealing with non-compressible items or transit situations that go through a lot of shaking and jostling.
