Changing gears in a motorbike

Riding a motor bike is a pride on itself. However, there are some challenges for new motorbike riders on changing gears properly. Such difficulties can also occur for a car driving learner. We are here to point out some tips for shifting gears on motorcycles. These tips will surely remove some of the complexities that create confusion for new motorbike riders.

Basic firsthand information

Having knowledge on how basic components works in a motorbike will be very helpful. For example, the throttle helps to revs up the motorbike engine. The clutch is connected with the transmission.

The basic function of a gear selector is to change and choose the gears. Every motorcycle has a basic pattern of a gear shift which is 6th gear to 5th gear and down to 2nd gear. Then there is neutral and the 1st gear.

The clutch makes a total control of a gear shift in a motorbike. When you pull the clutch it revs the engine. The motorbike doesn't move until you let go the clutch while in gear.

Practicing the gear shift

First of all the tip is to pull the clutch toward you when your bike is in neutral. Then put your left leg on gear handle and choose the desired gear. Your right hand should be in the right handle of the bike. Now turn the throttle and you will hear the engine rev up. Slowly let go the clutch while you gently feather the throttle. Your bike will start to accelerate now.

This is what you need to practice many times. Always choose a safe area like an unused parking lot or an open and vacant ground to practice.

When is the right time to change gears?

The right time to change gears depends on the rider. When a bike is accelerating, you will know when to change the gears by your own feel. There is no such standard time for changing gears.

Changing the gears into Neutral

This is very important part. During the gear shift, you will know where you gear is currently now. There is a green indicator on your motorbike that tells that your bike is now in neutral. If your bike is not in neutral, press the gear handle down by your left leg until you see the green indicator. This is how you should practice to find the right gear and know which one is it.

How to shift gears properly

The movement and the sound of a bike will help you to determine whether you are changing gears properly or not. Make a good adjustment if the bike starts to jerk while you pull of the clutch. If you feel a staggering moment, you should ease up on the throttle.

Some additional tips

Never forget to give the engine enough time to rev up during the gear shift. Otherwise, the motorbike will loose the speed.

When you want to make a stop you should reduce the speed by shifting a gear down and choose a low gear, and then release the clutch. With this tip you can always speed up again quickly. Never mind the skipping of the gears; it is okay even though you may have a rough ride. If the bike stalls then all you have to do is pull the clutch and start it again.

Motorbike riding is very easy task and when you know how to control a bike, it will give you a fantastic riding experience.
